Why do I have two filters in my air cleaner assembly?

The outer element or “Primary Element” eliminates over 98% of contaminant from reaching the engine.Enginaire

Filter media is least efficient when new and becomes more efficient as particles plug the passageways through the layers of paper.  As the filter becomes more efficient the restriction increases and less air is allowed through.  The outer element should be replaced when air restriction reaches 20 to 25 inches of water restriction.  Air restriction can be measured with an air restriction indicator.

The inner element or “Safety Element” is to protect the engine if a rupture of the primary element should occur.  The safety element also protects the engine from contaminates during the replacement of the primary element.  The safety element should remain in place for 3 to 5 outer element changes.
